Patagonia wetsuits feature high-quality Japanese superstretch neoprene that you won't find in any other suit on the market. Smooth skin coating on the torso and back reduce evaporative cooling in windy conditions. The interior consists of recycled polyester laminated to chlorine-free merino wool. It's constructed as a grid to create dead air space and retain lots of warmth. The wool is fast drying and reduces odor. An internal pullover style neck gasket blocks wind and prevents flushing at the zipper. Neoprene underarm panels are backed by nylon jersey on both sides for better stretch while paddling. Recycled polyester jersey outside the seat and legs increases durability with less environmental impact. All seams are triple glued and blindstitched for durability; crotch seams are internally taped. Anatomical, compression molded kneepads are PVC-free for better durability and less environmental harm.
Patagonia does wetsuits differently. They stand behind every suit with a lifetime warranty (does not cover wear and tear, of course.)

What a suit!

I reviewed a number of wetsuits before stopping on this one. The first day I paddled out the temp was 36 degrees in SF. The closure, neck sizing, and cuffs kept we warm for the entire session. The feeling of the wool interior takes some getting used to, but I was so warm that it made no noticeable difference. Great flex and shoulder modility too.
A fantastic buy for the money.

I was reluctant to spend the money on this wetsuit despite Patagonia's excellent reputation. However, I finally decided to splurge for christmas, particularly since I am surfing more now than I have in years. I live in Southern California, so the water temp. this time of year is typically in the mid to high 50's and ocassionally down into the low 50's. While I could have bought the R2 based on Patagonia's rating system, I chose the R3 to be safe, since I'd rather be too warm than cold. In addition, I was replacing a 4/3 and was very skeptical that a 2mm would do the job. The back zip is very easy to put on. At the same time, the flood gate and neck keep most of the water out. Unlike my old wetsuits from the 1970's, this wetsuit does not completely flush out with cold water every time you wipe out or duck under a wave thanks to the neck, and arm/leg cuffs. The wool lining made it easier to put the wetsuit on than other wetsuits and is very comfortable both wet and dry. In addition, the wool seemed to make a difference in keeping me warmer. On a recent stormy day, I felt toasty in my R3 when my friends in 4/3's were complaining about how cold it was. The wool also dries very fast. Unlike my other wetsuits, the R3 is dry after hanging it up overnight. The rubber itself is also very flexible. Unlike my 4/3 wetsuit, it did not feel as bulky or restrictive when I was paddling or riding waves. I have only had it a couple of weeks, so I cannot comment on the durability of the suit or claims that it will last longer than other brands. However, my one criticism is the lack of a convenient and secure key pocket. My other wetsuits have pockets sewn on the outside of the sleeve with a zipper and tether inside. Overall, I am happy with my decision to spend the extra money.
