Many of our customers want to know where to surf in San Diego. San Diego is home to many great surfing spots, and while it’s not a tropical paradise, being stateside means it’s easier for many aspiring surfers to travel to. Here’s a guide to the best surf San Diego surf spots!
La Jolla
La Jolla, “the Jewel,” is one of the best-known surfing spots in the world, and it tops any San Diego surf guide. Offering a strong surfing culture, the beach draws a range of eager newcomers and skilled veterans.

But be aware that La Jolla’s waves break rather far offshore, and they pack a punch. Dozens of people are injured by La Jolla’s waves every year, so consider this mecca to be best for seasoned surfers. The waves here are most impressive in summer and autumn. The ocean temperature gets as high as 68 degrees Fahrenheit in late August and dips as low as 57 in February.
Pacific Beach
Pacific Beach is another one of the hottest San Diego surf spots. While once a small, tired beach neighborhood, Pacific Beach has over the past 40 years morphed into a major surfing destination and tourism spot.
The wave breaks here are soft and comparatively gentle, so it’s a wonderful place for beginner surfers. When you’re ready to move on to tougher waves, check out Crystal Pier slightly to the south. Temperatures here peak around 72 degrees F in early September and get as low as 55 degrees in early February.
Lower Trestles
“Lowers” is home to many of the best waves in the world. Competitive surfers flock here year-round to take advantage of consistent, powerful waves and easy paddle-outs. These waves are so good they resemble artificial waves, and many famous surfers have listed Lowers’ waves as their favorites in the world.
Be aware that because the Lower Trestles’ waves are so fantastic, there are considerable crowds year-round — and it’s not really a spot for beginners. Ocean temperatures here vary between 55 degrees F in early February and 72 in early September.
As far as what to wear for surfing, a 4/3mm full wetsuit is the most versatile piece a person can own and use in San Diego. It will keep you warm for about 9 months out of the year. And for those really warm water temperatures, a wetsuit top will be your best friend.
